North Carolina Spring Fishing

After a week of 50+ degree weather it's beginning to feel like spring in North Carolina.  With the beautiful weather the NL Wilson staff is looking forward to shedding some of the winter layers and enjoying an increase in fishing opportunities.

The Snake River

FINALLY the runoff is over!! We began floating the Snake a few weeks ago with fair results. The fishing has picked up, fishing has been fast and furious. The average fish size has been around 14" up to a 21" caught last week by a fourteen year old kid out on his first fly fishing trip....on his 3rd cast!!

Colorado River

Fished the Colorado from Pumphouse to Radium yesterday. Great Fishing. We landed around a dozen fish in the four hours we were out there. Most exciting though were the two rainbows we landed and the one we had on. All were around 16-18 inches and very healthy. We also caught and landed a couple of big browns as well. The rest were whitefish. The river is down to around 900 cfs and is fishing well. It's only going to get better as more fish get back on the feed and into their feeding lanes. Should be a good June.

Breck Fishing

They must have stocked the Blue River through Breckenridge this last week for Memorial Day. The river flows are down too, but there sure seemed to be a lot of fish in the water around the area called "the steps". Anyway my 18 BWO parachute caught four in half an hour before the rain drove me away.

One Fish - Good or Bad?

Went fishing on the Blue River in Summit County Colorado today. On a whim I tied on a size 18 Parachute Adams. On my third or fourth cast I caught a nice rainbow. It was great, it jumped, it ran, it fought. I loved it. Problem was, I had just gotten out onto the river and here I was with a fish.

Big Stones = Big Fish

If you mention the “Henry’s Fork” in any western fly shop you are bound to attract some attention. This month on the Henry’s is my favorite time of year to fish. The stoneflies come out in droves to be devoured by any fish wanting our equivalent of a large T-bone steak (the average stonefly looks like it could carry off a small child).

Spawning Bass

Here in the mountains of western North Carolina the Largemouth Bass are starting to spawn. The spring spawn is a sacred time for bass anglers because the fish become exteremly agressive.

Spring's Coming to Colorado

I went fishing with my son yesterday. It was relatively great weather here in Summit County, Colorado. Sunny with highs in the low to mid 50s in March is something to be taken advantage of after the winter we’ve had this year. We first set out to the Snake River near our house. After parking and walking down to where the river (stream) enters Dillon Reservoir we started looking for prime lies. I know the fish from the lake like to come to the inlet this time of year looking for food, but hadn’t been there this early before.

Fishing Heating Up: a Late Winter Report

Here at our Biltmore School we are blessed with mild winter days and trout streams in close proximity. When warm, sunny days occur in December, January, and February, we go fishing. For those who are willing to work a little bit the rewards can be great.
